Kuruwita is located and surrounded by the boundary of the Nuwara Eliya District including the peaks of Samanala Mountain ranges in the North – East, the Ayagama Pradesheeya Sabha in the southwest, the Rathnapura Pradesheeya Sabha in the South – East and the Eheliyagoda Pradesheeya Sabha in the Northwest. It is approximately 87 km from Colombo. It used to be served by the 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge Sabaragamuwa Railway, a branch of the national railway system. Rathnapura is the main administrative district and the electorate of the Kuruwita area in which there are two Divisional Secretariats called Kuruwita and Kiriella. The main occupation of the people in this area descended from the multi-ethnic and multi-religious background in Agriculture and gemming. Kuruwita is very well known for the nearby waterfall called Bopath Ella. Bopath Ella is situated at Kuruwita, few miles away from Colombo Rathnapura high-level road. At this Bopath Ella, you find beautiful ancient history, the Delgamuwa Raja Maha Vihara, a temple that is reputed as the hiding place of the Tooth relic of Buddha during the ruling period of Portuguese in the country. Bopath Ella has a shape very similar to the leaf of the Sacred fig or “Bo” tree, which has earned it this name. The Bopath Ella is one of the splendid and attractive places which is located at the Kuruwita, and all the infrastructure facilities and other facilities such as tourist hotels, sanitary facilities, vehicle parking facilities, and tourist boat service also provided by the Kuruwita Pradesheeya Sabha. The residence of the very ancient Ape of Balangoda in Sri Lanka is in the Kuruwita area. The waterfall is a major tourist attraction in the country. Local myths say that it is haunted and that it hides a treasure trove.
At Kuruwita, the elevation towards West is on the 500 ft. line of cross-section and from the town of Kuruwita up to Adams Peak 1000 ft. in height. Here, the annual rainfall is 2500 mm – 3500 mm expanding everywhere. At Kuruwita you find beautiful lakes, rivers, and waterfalls.
